What Are the Most Exclusive Experiences in Barcelona?

Barcelona’s most exclusive experience is having Gaudí’s La Pedrera to yourselves after closing, with the rooftop chimneys lit against the night sky, which we arrange by request. Close behind come a private, guided morning in the Sagrada Família, the Escolania boys’ choir at Montserrat, one of the oldest in Europe, and cava tasted in the Modernista cellars of the Penedès where Spain’s sparkling wine began.

Our 5-Day Barcelona and Catalonia itinerary includes La Pedrera after closing, Montserrat and the cava cellars of the Penedès, all from one hotel, so you unpack once. Every route is a starting point your planner shapes around you.

We have planned Barcelona for American travelers since 2002, and the difference between a good visit and an exceptional one is access and timing. Here is how we build it.

From our planners

Trip planning can be stressful: 24 browser tabs open and no progress.

Arrival transfers, hotels, guides, drivers, timing and reservations all affect each other. That’s why many travelers work with our expert travel advisors, to get the personalized trip they want without the endless research and worry.

Which Gaudí experiences can be private?

By arrangement, La Pedrera opens after hours for you alone, from the curving brick attic to the rooftop chimneys. At the Sagrada Família, a licensed guide walks you beneath the tree-like columns and explains what Gaudí hid in the stone. Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia and Park Güell follow the same afternoon by car, so you see Gaudí’s great works on your first day without the long walks between them.

What are the best experiences outside the city?

  • Montserrat: the Benedictine monastery among serrated peaks, about an hour from Barcelona, where your planner times the visit to hear the Escolania sing when the schedule allows
  • The Penedès: cava in the cellars of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, about 45 minutes from Montserrat
  • Girona: the widest Gothic nave in the world and one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval Jewish quarters, about 1 hour 15 minutes north

Who guides you in Barcelona?

Licensed guides we work with in Barcelona include Irma and Mariona, both highly educated locals who care about the people they guide. We request your guides by name, and your planner confirms who leads each day once your dates are set.

When is the best time to visit?

April to June and September to October. Barcelona averages highs of about 64°F in April, 79°F in September and 72°F in October. In July and August, early starts and an afternoon by the sea keep the days comfortable. Flying in? Read should you fly into Madrid or Barcelona.
