Itinerary

Day One
Porto: Ribeira, São Bento and Port Wine
Your private transfer from the airport brings you to the hotel before the afternoon begins in the Ribeira, Porto's UNESCO-listed waterfront, where rows of colored houses rise above the Douro. From there, the route continues through the historic center to São Bento station, where Jorge Colaço's 22,000 azulejo tiles trace scenes from Portuguese history across the walls. The day closes in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Dom Luís I Bridge, where the old wine lodges that built Porto's reputation still hold their cellars. Your private guide arranges a tasting at one of them.

Day Two
Porto: Markets, Food Stops, and Port Wine
The morning begins at Bolhão Market, Porto’s historic iron-and-glass market hall and one of the city’s most emblematic places. From there, your private guide continues through Santa Catarina and Avenida dos Aliados, with stops along the way for some of the food Porto is known for: bifana, cachorrinhos, éclairs, and pastéis de nata. Later, the day turns to the Francesinha question, because every Porto local has an opinion on where it is done best, and your guide has one too. Food and wine run together naturally here, and the day ends at the table, with Portuguese wines and local specialties.

Day Three
Braga & Guimarães: Origins of Portugal
Your private guide takes you north to Braga and Guimarães, two cities closely tied to the foundations of Portugal. Braga, often known as the Portuguese Rome, is shaped by a long religious legacy and anchored by the oldest cathedral in the country, with churches, fountains, and historic streets that reflect its importance over the centuries. From there, Guimarães feels more distinctly medieval, with its UNESCO-listed historic center, castle, and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza all helping to tell the story of Afonso Henriques and the formation of the Portuguese kingdom.

Day Four
Douro: Schist, Vines, and a Family Quinta
An hour east of Porto, the landscape changes completely. The road winds into the UNESCO-listed Alto Douro Wine Region, where schist hillsides have been cut into terraces over centuries of winemaking. The route passes through Peso da Régua and continues toward Pinhão, two of the valley’s key wine towns, before reaching a family-owned wine estate. There, your private guide and the estate team take you through the vineyards and winery before a tasting and a relaxed lunch at the property, with regional food and Douro wines served in the heart of the valley.

Day Five
Douro: On the River and Through the Vines
The second day in the valley stays close to the river and the land. Depending on your preference, the morning can begin on the water with a kayak route from Tua to Pinhão, or at a slower pace aboard a traditional rabelo boat drifting through the terraced landscape. An e-bike ride between vineyards and small valley towns is another option. The day can also include Lamego, set back from the river, where the cathedral dates to the 12th century and the Baroque staircase of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios rises above the town in 686 steps.

Day Six
Lisbon: Miradouros, Alfama, and the Age of Discovery
A private transfer from the Douro brings you to Lisbon. The afternoon begins at one of the city’s hilltop miradouros before dropping into Alfama, one of the oldest parts of Lisbon, a dense quarter of alleys and stairways above the Tagus. From there, the route opens into the Baixa, the grid of neoclassical streets rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, with Portuguese mosaic pavements underfoot. The day continues west to Belém, where the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém recall the era of Portugal’s maritime expansion. The day ends at the original Pastéis de Belém bakery, where the same recipe has been in use since 1837.

Day Seven
Sintra, Cascais, and Quinta da Regaleira
Your driver takes you into the wooded hills west of Lisbon to Sintra, a longtime retreat of the Portuguese court. The morning centers on Quinta da Regaleira, one of Sintra’s most layered estates, where gardens, initiation wells, and symbolic architecture reward time and attention. Afterward, the route continues through Sintra’s historic center before following the coastal road to Cascais, a traditional fishing town on the Atlantic with later royal associations

Day Eight
South to the Algarve
A private transfer takes you south from Lisbon to the Algarve. After arrival, enjoy a privately guided walk along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Over the course of three hours, the path runs along limestone cliffs above the Atlantic, with small coves and open sea views that make a memorable first introduction to the Algarve coast.

Day Nine
Western Algarve: Lagos, Sagres, and Cabo de São Vicente
Today traces the western Algarve, where the coast opens more fully to the Atlantic. The morning begins in Lagos, an old port shaped by Portugal’s seafaring past, before a boat trip along the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade, where limestone cliffs, rock arches, and sea caves are best seen from the water. Later, continue to Sagres Fortress and Cabo de São Vicente, where the cliffs, the wind, and the open ocean give this far southwestern corner of Portugal a more austere feel.

Day Ten
Departure
A private transfer takes you to the airport for your onward flight.
