Itinerary

Street in Madrid’s old town seen through a stone archway

Day One

Historic Madrid

Meet & great at the airport with a driver to zip you direct to your hotel for 3 nights in Madrid. The journey begins in Madrid's historic core. Plaza Mayor, a 17th-century rectangle of ochre stone, remains the center of gravity of the old town. Mercado de San Miguel is next door; Puerta del Sol is five minutes away. Plaza de Santa Ana, quieter and more literary, is where madrileños have been meeting since the 19th century. The Royal Palace closes the afternoon: the largest in Western Europe, still used for state ceremonies. The evening is a natural introduction to Spanish tapas culture.

Alcázar of Segovia, Spain

Day Two

Medieval & Roman Segovia

An hour from Madrid, Segovia rises above the Castilian plain. The Roman aqueduct at its entrance was built in the 1st century AD without mortar, relying only on gravity and precisely cut granite blocks, and it still stands today. The Alcázar, rising above the meeting point of two rivers, was also where Isabella of Castile was proclaimed queen. The UNESCO-listed old city also holds its cathedral. Outside town, La Granja de San Ildefonso is the royal palace and garden complex Philip V built in the early 18th century, his Castilian answer to Versailles.

Monument and boating lake in El Retiro Park, Madrid

Day Three

Madrid’s Art Triangle

The Paseo del Prado runs through one of Madrid’s most cultural stretches. Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Cibeles, and the monumental fountains along the boulevard lead toward the Art Triangle, home to the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and the Reina Sofía. The Prado is especially distinguished by the strength of its Spanish masters, including Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco, and Las Meninas remains one of those works that stops visitors in their tracks. From there, El Retiro brings a calmer close to the afternoon, before an evening of flamenco in an intimate setting.

Day Four

Barcelona Begins

The high-speed train between Madrid and Barcelona covers just over 600 kilometers in two and a half hours. Barcelona arrives differently from Madrid: Mediterranean light, a different language on the street, a different relationship between the city and the sea. The afternoon is yours.

Street in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter framed by a historic archway

Day Five

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter & Flavors

The Gothic Quarter brings together Roman walls from the 3rd century, a medieval cathedral, and the remains of El Call, Barcelona’s old Jewish quarter, within just a few streets. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, built in the 14th century by the people of La Ribera, remains one of the city’s finest examples of Catalan Gothic. In Plaça de Sant Jaume, the Palau de la Generalitat and City Hall stand opposite one another across the square, which has long been the political center of Barcelona. Plaça del Rei offers a glimpse of the city’s earlier past. Nearby, La Boqueria adds another layer to the neighborhood’s character, especially in the morning, when the market still retains more of its local rhythm.

View of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

Day Six

Gaudí’s Barcelona Architecture

Anton Gaudi devoted 43 years to creating the Sagrada Familia, one of Europe's most famous sights. A streetcar killed him in 1926 before he could finish it. Construction remains ongoing. Standing inside, looking up at the columns that branch like trees toward the vault, with the stained glass turning the light green and amber and blue depending on the hour, the building makes sense in a way no image prepares you for. Park Guell, the garden city Gaudi designed that never found buyers, sits above the city in the Gracia neighborhood with the best view over Barcelona.
