At a glance. Ideal stay: a full day from Madrid, or one night · Best months: May and June, September and October · Nearest airport: Madrid Barajas (MAD), about an hour and a quarter by road · From $884 per person per day, double occupancy, excl. flights
Ávila’s old town is still fully enclosed by its medieval walls, a ring of stone about a mile and a half around, with nearly 90 towers and nine gates. From the Cuatro Postes, a small stone shrine across the river, you see the walls stretch across the skyline, glowing gold in the late afternoon light. Timing that view is our work.
What does a licensed guide show you in Ávila?
Your licensed guide shapes the day around what you love, with the wall walk and the cathedral timed for the quiet hours.
A walk along the ramparts
Building began in the late eleventh century, after Castile took Toledo, and most of the circuit was rebuilt in the twelfth. The walls still stand complete today. About two-thirds of the circuit, some 1,700 meters, is open to walk, high above the rooftops and the plain. Set into the stones you will spot verracos, granite boars carved by the Celtic Vettones more than 2,000 years ago and reused by the builders. The old city and its churches outside the walls form a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A cathedral built into the wall
Ávila’s cathedral is part church and part fortress. Its apse, the Cimorro, forms one of the towers of the city wall, and the building is often called the first Gothic cathedral in Spain. Inside, the stone turns from red to white, a mottled granite quarried nearby.
Saint Teresa’s city
Teresa of Ávila was born here in 1515, founded her first reformed convent, San José, in 1562, and in 1970 became the first woman named a Doctor of the Church. The convent of Santa Teresa stands on the site of her family home, and the Monastery of the Incarnation keeps the cell where she lived for nearly thirty years.

Where do Abulenses eat?
Ávila is beef country. Carne de Ávila, from the black Avileña cattle raised on the high pastures of the province, carries its own protected name, and it arrives grilled over embers at the old asadores inside the walls. The white beans of El Barco de Ávila, stewed slowly with chorizo, are the winter dish of the Gredos valleys.
For dessert, yemas de Santa Teresa, small rounds of egg yolk and sugar named for the city’s saint, are the sweet every Spaniard links to Ávila. We can direct you to the best ones.
What are the best hotels in Ávila?
Most of our travelers stay in Madrid and see Ávila as a private day. If you stay the night, two of the finest choices are the Parador de Ávila and the Palacio de los Velada. The Parador fills the sixteenth-century Palacio de Piedras Albas, built against the wall, with a garden at the foot of the ramparts. The Palacio de los Velada, a palace hotel beside the cathedral, gathers its rooms around an arcaded Renaissance courtyard. Both are four-star hotels, chosen for their setting.
How many days should you spend in Ávila?
One full day from Madrid covers the walls, the cathedral, Saint Teresa’s convents and lunch. Many of our travelers pair Ávila with Segovia, just over an hour apart by road. Stay a night to see the walls lit after dark, and add a morning in the Sierra de Gredos.
When is the best time to visit Ávila?
May and June and September and October bring the most comfortable days. At about 3,700 feet, Ávila is the highest provincial capital in Spain, so summer days are mild and winter can bring snow to the walls. October brings the festival of Saint Teresa, the city’s patron. Hotels, like airlines, use dynamic pricing, so rates rise with demand. A higher price marks a popular week, not a poor time to travel.
Where can you hike near Ávila?
The Sierra de Gredos rises about an hour south of the city, the granite heart of central Spain. We know the light hiking trails with the finest views, from the Plataforma de Gredos toward the Laguna Grande, a glacial lake below the range’s highest peak, where Iberian ibex graze the slopes.
