Most of our travelers see Segovia on a private day from Madrid, about an hour and a quarter by road, and some stay a night to walk the old town after the day visitors leave. Your licensed guide leads you from the Roman aqueduct through the cathedral to the Alcázar, ideally from April to June or September to November. Private journeys including Segovia start from $884 per person per day, based on double occupancy, excluding flights.

At a glance. Ideal stay: a full day from Madrid, or one night · Best months: April to June, September to November · Nearest airport: Madrid Barajas (MAD), about an hour and a quarter by road · From $884 per person per day, double occupancy, excl. flights

At Segovia’s classic roast houses, the cochinillo, suckling pig roasted in a wood oven, is so tender the host carves it with the edge of a plate, then smashes the plate on the floor. Lunch here is an occasion, and the city plans its day around it. Knowing which dining room still keeps the ritual is our work.

What does a licensed guide show you in Segovia?

Your licensed guide shapes the day around what you love, with entries reserved before you arrive and the old town seen at the quiet hours.

A Roman aqueduct in daily use until 1973

The aqueduct strides through the lower town on two tiers of granite arches, set without mortar some 1,900 years ago. It carried the city’s water until 1973, and cars drove beneath its arches until 1992. Ferdinand and Isabella had dozens of its arches rebuilt, and the old Royal Mint below the walls struck coins stamped with the aqueduct as Segovia’s mark. The old town and aqueduct form a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Alcázar and a queen’s first day

The Alcázar rises on a rock where two rivers meet, its slate turrets like the prow of a ship. Isabella took refuge here, and in December 1474 she walked down to the church of San Miguel to be proclaimed Queen of Castile. Inside, the Hall of the Kings lines its frieze with the monarchs of Asturias, León and Castile, and the tower climb ends in a view across the plain to the Guadarrama.

Where do Segovianos eat?

Roast meat comes first. Beside cochinillo, the wood ovens turn out lechazo, milk-fed lamb, served with nothing more than a green salad. Judiones de La Granja, giant white beans stewed slowly with chorizo and pork, are the dish of the mountain villages. For dessert, ponche segoviano layers sponge cake and custard under a marzipan crust, marked with a diamond pattern in toasted sugar. Ribera del Duero and the white wines of Rueda, both about an hour’s drive north, fill the glasses.

On request, a local chef leads you through a market in the morning and cooks lunch with what you choose.

What are the best hotels in Segovia?

Most of our travelers stay in Madrid and see Segovia as a private day. If you stay the night, two of the finest choices are the Parador de La Granja and the Parador de Segovia. The Parador de La Granja fills the eighteenth-century Casa de los Infantes beside the royal palace and its gardens. The Parador de Segovia stands on a hill outside the city, with a terrace view of the whole old town, lit at night. Both are four-star hotels, chosen for their setting.

How many days should you spend in Segovia?

One full day from Madrid covers the aqueduct, the cathedral, the Alcázar and a long-awaited lunch. Stay a night to add La Granja’s palace and gardens and a morning walk in the Guadarrama, or pair Segovia with Ávila, just over an hour away by road.

When is the best time to visit Segovia?

April to June and September to November bring the most comfortable days. Segovia sits at about 3,300 feet, so summer evenings stay cool and winter brings snow to the Guadarrama behind the Alcázar. La Granja runs its great fountains on a few set days each year, and your planner can tell you which fall in your dates. Hotels, like airlines, use dynamic pricing, so rates rise with demand. A higher price marks a popular week, not a poor time to travel.

Where can you hike near Segovia?

The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park begins at La Granja’s gates. We know the light hiking trails with the finest views, through the old royal pine forests of Valsaín and along the slopes below Peñalara, the range’s highest peak. La Granja itself, a summer palace begun in 1721 with gardens modeled on Versailles, keeps the Royal Glass Factory, where glassblowers still work the furnaces.

How does Segovia fit a journey through Spain?

Segovia is the classic private day from Madrid, and the high-speed train reaches it in under half an hour, with a driver waiting at the station. Pair it with Ávila on the same day or the next, or continue north to the Ribera del Duero wineries or west to Salamanca. On the way to Barcelona, our sample journeys pair Madrid and Segovia with Gaudí’s city.
