7 Days Portugal Itinerary
Day 1: Porto
Unfortunately, it is impossible to truly experience all that Porto has to offer in just one day. Whilst you may find day tours that will cram in fleeting glimpses of a lot of the main highlights, we find that ultimately it is an unsatisfying way to spend your time.
Rather, our personal tour planner will be in touch to discuss which of the main highlights of Porto you would like to spend precious time with alongside your private guide, enjoying privileged skip-the-line access to the main sites in order to spend more time experiencing what makes Porto such a vibrant, important and historic city.
Some of the sites we will discuss arranging on your private tour are:
- Cais da Ribeira
- Livraria Lello
- Carmo and Carmelitas Churches
- The Azulejos
- Dom Luis Bridge
- Palácio da Bolsa
- Praça da Liberdade
- Casa da Musica
- Foz do Duro
- Porto Cathedral
- Clerigos Tower
- Sao Bento Train Station
- Church of Sao Francisco
In the evening we will arrange a private wine tasting and fine dining experience for you depending on your tastes and preferences.
Day 2: Aveiro & best of the West Coast of Portugal
An hour’s drive south of Porto lies the “Venice of Portugal”. So-called due to the gondola-style “Moliceiros” boats that glide along Aveiro’s canals. Alongside this picture postcard-perfect backdrop you will also find stunning Art Nouveau buildings, & traditional patterned Portuguese pavement.
On our Aveiro and best of the West Coast day trip from Portugal you will enjoy:
- A walking tour through the streets of Aveiro & gorgeous views across the lagoon
- A private boat cruise on a Moliceiros
- Explore the tallest lighthouse in Europe in the coastal town of Barra
- Costa Nova while being amazed by its local fisherman houses!
- Lunch at the pier and enjoy the colorfully painted houses of Costa Nova Beach
- A guided tour of the famous Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory in Ilhavo where artists will be in residence painting fine porcelain works of art
“I urge everyone who values unforgettable vacations to contact Magical Spain and talk to Dan or Rachel.
Beyond the personalized planning and fine 24-7 tour support, we loved the quality and care of the licensed guides, the delicious tapas, the exotic ambiance of Seville and Granada, Madrid’s majesty and art, medieval Toledo, and meeting the olive oil estate owners, artist, chef & winemaker.”
Day 3: Douro Valley Tour from Porto
The Douro Valley is one of the most genuinely Portuguese landscapes. A succession of vineyards on terraces, uphill, that accompany the meanders that this great river draws in its last stretch through the north of the Lusitanian country. Fabulous wines, stately villas, medieval towns, and postcard views around every bend are so commonplace as to be expected here.
On your private tour experience of the Douro Valley we have prepared the following for you:
- Private tour of a premium vineyard
- Private Wine tasting experience with artisan winemaker
- Douro Valley (vineyard, wine tasting)
- A Pinhão or boat cruise along the river
After a few more glasses of Port Wine and a meal back on land, it is time for your driver-guide for the day to return you to your central Porto accommodation.
Day 4: Porto to Coimbra to Lisbon
Your private driver-guide will collect you in the morning to make your way to Lisbon – the country’s largest city. This is a long drive, so we will stop for lunch in the fascinating town of Coimbra, the medieval capital.
Here you can see the Old Cathedral and the Almedina Arch. The most famous site here is the historic campus of the University of Coimbra, a World Heritage Site and one of the oldest Universities in the world, where you will also have the opportunity to explore the magnificent Joanina Library.
When we stop for lunch you can sample some Coimbra classics like Santa Clara pastries and a hearty lamb stew known as Chanfana at an authentic Portuguese restaurant.
Before leaving Coimbra for Lisbon, your guide will take you to the Baixa district of Coimbra which revolves around the Praça Do Comércio, and where you will visit the beautiful São Tiago Church and the Santa Cruz Park.
We will arrive in Lisbon in the early evening and your guide will take you to your luxury accommodation before dropping you off for a well-earned 5-star dining experience in the city center to round off the day.
Day 5: Lisbon
Today we will guide you through Lisbon’s main attractions! Often we start the day at one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Lisbon. The perfect place for your exclusive guide to introduce you to the history of the Portuguese capital.
On your way back to the historic center, you will pass by Lisbon’s oldest districts. Stroll through the narrow streets and alleys of Alfama, visit the most beautiful monuments, and gardens, and savor the best tidbits in town.
On any best of Lisbon tour, one cannot miss a visit to Belém, Lisbon’s most famous and monumental area. You will visit the church of the Jerónimos Monastery and admire the iconic Belém Tower.
If you enjoy sweets, hello Pastéis de Belém! A pastry shop where locals love to nab the best custard tart in Portugal… and maybe Europe!
To round off this extensive private tour of Lisbon in a day, you will discover the beauty and charm of Lisbon while sailing with us along the Tagus river.
On this guided private boat tour you’ll listen to the history of Portugal and learn about all the most important monuments of the city from a different perspective.
“Thanks for the great work during our Spanish Food and Wine Adventure…. you guys really know your stuff and are great guides & hosts! We’ll be back for northern Spain in the future!”
Day 6: Obidos & Tomar
In the north of Lisbon, you will find Óbidos, one of the most beautiful towns in Europe, surrounded by 15th-century walls that enchant you with its white houses and red roofs, balconies, and terraces full of flowers and its narrow cobblestone streets.
Among the places that you cannot miss is the Porta da Vila, the main access gate to the city, decorated with precious traditional tiles, and the tour of the wall.
Tomar, refuge of the Templars
Your guide will take you to explore Tomar, a beautiful & historic town connected with the history of the medieval Knights Templar. As you may know, the Templars have been an enigmatic topic for many centuries.
One cannot leave Tomar without a visit to one of the most spectacular monuments in Portugal: The Convent of Christ which was a very important Templar Knights site.
Day 7: Alentejo & Évora tour from Lisbon
Today we say adieu to Lisbon and go into the rustic and ancient Alentejo region. Discover the wonders of Évora, (a Roman town with medieval walls) and its surroundings. An authentic museum city that has maintained its old walls nearly untouched, Évora is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
You can visit a traditional cork factory. The historical richness of Évora and its surroundings fascinates more and more people and our guides will tell you all the details.
Also possible to visit Monsaraz and Almendres Cromlech – The Almendres Cromlech is a neolithic collection of mysterious standing stones, and one of gigantic proportions!
From the era of pagan enchantment, known as the New Stone Age. Built towards sunrise and sunset, this megalithic enclosure (mega=big; litho=stone) is located on a gentle slope on Almendres Estate.
“Outstanding, seamless planning with a very personalized itinerary executed perfectly…..
In Spain, we felt like VIPs as we met the winemakers in La Rioja and Ribera del Duero, the chefs, the village mayor and flamenco dancer in Sevilla! The unique experiences and memories beat that of 4 or 5 cruises. We will be back to do Andalucia or Portugal in a few years”
