Plan one or two nights in Bilbao, ideally in May, June, September or October, at the start of a journey through the Basque Country and the Rioja. Your licensed guide leads you through Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum, the Seven Streets of the old town and the market of La Ribera, with San Sebastián, the coast and the wine country within easy reach. Private journeys including Bilbao start from $884 per person per day, based on double occupancy, excluding flights.

At a glance. Ideal stay: one or two nights · Best months: May, June, September and October · Nearest airport: Bilbao (BIO), about 20 minutes from the center · From $884 per person per day, double occupancy, excl. flights

Bilbao grew rich on shipyards and ironworks. In 1997 the Guggenheim opened on former industrial dockland beside the river and became one of the most visited museums in Spain. Frank Gehry wrapped it in titanium panels that shift from silver to gold with the weather. A giant terrier of living flowers, Jeff Koons’s Puppy, guards the entrance, and Louise Bourgeois’s spider Maman stands by the river. Afterward, your guide walks you into the old town as the pintxos bars of the Plaza Nueva set out their counters for the evening.

What does a licensed guide show you in Bilbao?

Your licensed guide, usually Mikel or Malen, shapes the days around what you love, with timed entries reserved before you arrive.

The Guggenheim Museum

Gehry’s curved galleries hold the museum’s own collection and changing exhibitions, and the largest gallery holds Richard Serra’s The Matter of Time, eight walk-through sculptures of weathering steel, among them spirals, ellipses and the long, curving Snake. Your guide times the visit for the quieter morning hours and reads the building from the river and the bridge as well as from inside.

The Seven Streets and La Ribera

The Casco Viejo grew from seven parallel streets beside the river, and it still holds the cathedral of Santiago, the arcaded Plaza Nueva and the family shops of the old town. On the riverbank, the Art Deco market of La Ribera is one of the largest covered markets in Europe, with Basque cheeses, peppers and salt cod on its stalls.

The Vizcaya Bridge

Downriver at Portugalete, a gondola hangs from a steel span of 1893 and carries cars and people across the estuary. It was the first transporter bridge in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and on request you walk across the upper walkway, 45 meters above the water.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

On the coast near Bermeo, about 45 minutes from Bilbao, a stone causeway and 241 steps climb to a hermitage on a rocky islet above the Bay of Biscay. Visitors ring the chapel bell three times and make a wish. The site stood in for Dragonstone in Game of Thrones, and on busy days access is limited, so your planner reserves the free entry passes in advance.

Where do Bilbaínos eat and drink?

Bilbao’s signature dish is bacalao al pil pil, salt cod cooked slowly in olive oil and garlic until the gelatin from the skin turns the oil into a golden sauce. Locals take pintxos and a glass of txakoli at the bars around the Plaza Nueva before dinner, and they call the fine rain that drifts in from the sea sirimiri.

Twenty minutes from the center, Eneko Atxa’s Azurmendi holds three Michelin stars in a glass building set into a hillside of txakoli vines. On request, your planner adds a tasting at a family txakoli winery on the coast at Bakio, or a lunch of grilled fish in the port of Bermeo.

What are the best hotels in Bilbao?

The finest is The Artist, Grand Hotel of Art, the five-star hotel formerly known as the Gran Hotel Domine, directly across from the Guggenheim, with interiors by the designer Javier Mariscal and a rooftop bar that looks onto Gehry’s curves. For a four-star boutique stay a short walk from the museum, the Miró Hotel was designed by the Spanish fashion designer Antonio Miró, with a calm, minimalist style and a small spa. Your planner matches the hotel to your pace and your route.

How many days should you spend in Bilbao?

One or two nights. One full day covers the Guggenheim, the old town and an evening of pintxos. A second adds the coast at Gaztelugatxe and the fishing port of Bermeo, or the Urdaibai estuary and Gernika, keeping the same hotel.

When is the best time to visit Bilbao?

May, June, September and October bring mild days from around 70°F to the mid 70s°F. July and August are warm and lively, with the city’s Aste Nagusia festival filling the streets for nine days in August. Rain falls in every season, so the Guggenheim makes a natural plan for a gray morning. Hotels, like airlines, use dynamic pricing, so rates rise with demand. A higher price marks a popular week, not a poor time to travel.

Where can you hike near Bilbao?

The Urdaibai estuary, about 40 minutes northeast, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of marshes, oak woods and beaches around Mundaka, known for one of the best left-hand surf waves in Europe. We know the light hiking trails with the finest views, from the coastal path above Gaztelugatxe to the summit of Mount Artxanda, reached by a funicular from the city center, with all of Bilbao spread below.

How does Bilbao fit a journey through Spain?

Bilbao is the natural gateway to northern Spain. San Sebastián is about an hour and a quarter by road, Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa about an hour and a half, and Santander about an hour and a quarter to the west. From Madrid or Barcelona, a short flight reaches Bilbao, and your licensed driver handles every leg from there, which makes Bilbao an easy start for a journey that continues to San Sebastián and the Rioja, or across northern Spain to Spain and Portugal on one private journey.
