Short answer: There is not a huge difference if you do the Preferente class

Alvia and Altaria services are first class trains. They are more flexible than the AVE because, they can be used for routes in which some parts of the journey uses high speed tracks, while the AVE parts uses conventional ones. They normally have similar levels of comfort, but Alvias are faster.

If you are looking for more leather seats and don’t mind about the cost, no doubt do the AVE trains. Of course balance this with the time you have available as the difference is NOT worth wasting an hour for busy people with limited time for their Spain luxury vacation tour.

Here is more on the AVE.  Preferente is very nice, with on-seat food and drinks, press, etc.

The  Club level seats are the most comfortable, with soft drinks, leather seats, à la carte meals, free parking. (Are your driving though?) In both AVE Club and Preferente are individual seats are possible for single travelers. Most seats are Turista which is fine, like biz class on airlines or better.   AVE Turista Food is only served at the Cafeteria coach.
