A Journey Designed Just for You

Our resident experts wrote this itinerary as a starting point, and your planner shapes every day around your interests, pace and travel style.

What do our American travelers say?

A family on their private tour of Spain with their children.

The 10-day family itinerary at a glance

Your family spends three nights on the Algarve coast, three in Lisbon and three in Porto. Day one is a road transfer from Lisbon airport to the central Algarve, about 3 hours with a coffee stop, or a connecting flight to Faro of about 45 minutes. Day four runs back north to Lisbon by road, about 3 hours. Day six is a day trip to Sintra, about 30 minutes from Lisbon. On day seven the Alfa Pendular train carries the family from Lisbon Oriente to Porto Campanhã in about 2 hours 45 minutes.

You stay in a choice from our vetted luxury five-star or deluxe four-star boutique hotels, with connecting rooms, family suites or apartments matched to your room plan. Our planners confirm the bed type based on the hotel and room category you prefer.

Spring and early autumn suit this route best, from April to June and in September and October, when the sea has warmed and the cities are mild for walking. School-holiday summers work well too. Your planner builds them around early boat trips, beach mornings and afternoons by the pool.

Licensed guides we work with in Lisbon, Sintra and Porto lead the city days at your children’s pace, and our team in Lisbon looks after the family from the first transfer to the last.

Why the route runs from the Algarve to Porto

Most flights from the US land in Lisbon, after a night in the air. Starting by the sea gives the whole family three nights to reset in one hotel, with boat trips and beach time, before the city days begin. The route then moves in one direction, north through Lisbon and Sintra to Porto, so nobody retraces a road, and the fast train replaces a long drive. Your flight home leaves from Porto airport, about 25 minutes from the center.

Families who want more sand stay a fourth night in the Algarve. Families who want more history add the Douro Valley or Coimbra between Lisbon and Porto.

Route
Algarve, Lisbon, Sintra, Porto

Your planner adjusts every day to your dates.

Guests walking on the beach below the golden cliffs at Vila Vita Parc, Porches, Algarve, Portugal

Day One

Arrival: South to the Algarve Coast

Your driver meets the family at Lisbon airport and heads south across the Tagus, past cork oaks and olive groves, to the Algarve coast, with a coffee stop on the way. Families who prefer to fly connect to Faro instead. Three nights by the sea begin with the pool, the sand and a first sunset over golden cliffs. On request, your planner arranges an easy early-evening walk along the clifftops near your hotel.

Two dolphins leaping from the deep blue Atlantic in front of the green coast of an Azorean island, Portugal

Day Two

Benagil Sea Caves and Dolphins by Boat

Board a private boat in Portimão and follow the ochre cliffs east toward Benagil. Smaller boats slip inside the sea cave for a few minutes, under the round opening in its roof where sunlight falls onto the sand. Keep watch on the way out and back: common and bottlenose dolphins live off this coast all year. The afternoon belongs to the hotel pool, or older children take a surf lesson on request.

Travelers hiking the Seven Hanging Valleys clifftop trail above the Atlantic, Lagoa, Algarve, Portugal

Day Three

The Seven Hanging Valleys Clifftop Walk

Walk the clifftop path from Praia da Marinha toward Benagil, about 2 kilometers past sea stacks, arches and hidden coves, with the surf booming below. The full trail runs about 6 kilometers to Vale de Centeanes, so keen walkers carry on while younger ones head down to the beach at Marinha. Afternoon options include a guided kayak for older children, the grottoes of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos by boat, or more time in the water.

Lisbon's hills and Praça do Comércio seen from the Tagus, Portugal

Day Four

North to Lisbon and the Castle Above Alfama

Your driver takes the family north to Lisbon, about 3 hours with a stop on the way. Your licensed guide then leads a gentle walk up through the stepped lanes of Alfama to São Jorge Castle, where children walk the ramparts and peacocks wander the gardens. From the walls, the red roofs of the old city tumble down to the Tagus. Dinner stays easy, with grilled fish or a plate of pastries close to the hotel.

Belém Tower reflected in calm water in Lisbon, Portugal.

Day Five

Belém, Custard Tarts and the Oceanário

Start in Belém, where the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower recall the ships that sailed from this shore for India and Brazil. Children taste their first pastéis de nata, warm and dusted with cinnamon, at the bakery that has baked them since 1837. After lunch, cross the city to the Oceanário, where sharks, rays and a giant sunfish circle a central tank of about five million liters. A tile-painting workshop is available on request.

The Gothic-style palace of Quinta da Regaleira rising above its gardens and stone staircase in Sintra, Portugal

Day Six

Sintra: Pena Palace and the Initiation Well

Drive about 30 minutes into the green hills of Sintra. Pena Palace rises in red and yellow towers above the forest, a storybook palace that wins over every age. At Quinta da Regaleira, the family spirals 27 meters down the Initiation Well, nine landings into the earth, and follows a tunnel out toward the lake. On the way back to Lisbon, an hour on the sand at Cascais or a stroll past its lighthouse closes the day.

The Dom Luís I Bridge over the Douro River at sunset, with the historic center of Porto on the hillside, Portugal

Day Seven

By Fast Train to Porto and the Six Bridges

Your driver brings the family to Lisbon Oriente for the Alfa Pendular, about 2 hours 45 minutes north to Porto Campanhã, where a driver waits on arrival. Porto tumbles down to the Douro in tiled houses and church towers. In the afternoon, walk across the top deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge for the view, then board a traditional rabelo boat for a 50-minute cruise under the city's six bridges.

Azulejo Porto Private Luxury Travel

Day Eight

Porto: Tiles, a Storybook Bookshop and Chocolate

Your licensed guide starts at São Bento station, where some 20,000 blue and white tiles tell stories from Portugal's history. Next comes the carved red staircase of Livraria Lello, with entry booked ahead. Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, the Chocolate Story museum follows cacao from bean to bar, with tastings along the way, and adults add a port and chocolate pairing on request.

The Pérgola da Foz, a seafront colonnade overlooking the Atlantic in Foz do Douro, Porto, Portugal

Day Nine

Treetops at Serralves and the Atlantic at Foz

A slower day. At Serralves Park, walk the Treetop Walk, a wooden path about 250 meters long that runs through the canopy, then let the children loose in the gardens. Lunch by the ocean in Foz do Douro, where the river meets the Atlantic and waves break against the old pier. Families with older children choose a day in the Douro Valley instead, with a river boat and a quinta lunch, on request.

Terraced gardens of the Palácio de Cristal with a fountain and agapanthus, overlooking the Douro River and the Arrábida Bridge, Porto, Portugal

Day Ten

Departure from Porto

A last breakfast with a view of the river, then your driver takes the family to Porto airport, about 25 minutes from the center. Families with more time add nights in the Douro Valley, or fly on to the islands of Madeira or the Azores for a few days of volcanic peaks and sea.

Getting around

  • Day 1: Lisbon airport to the central Algarve by road, about 3 hours, with a coffee stop on the way, or a connecting flight to Faro, about 45 minutes, then about 40 minutes by road.
  • Day 2: A short drive to Portimão marina, then about 2 hours by boat along the coast.
  • Day 3: A short drive to Praia da Marinha, then about 2 kilometers on foot, more for keen walkers.

  • Day 10: Hotel to Porto airport, about 25 minutes.

What does a 10-day Portugal family vacation itinerary include?

A 10-day Portugal family vacation itinerary with our team covers the Algarve coast, Lisbon, Sintra and Porto from three hotel bases, with three nights in each. Each full day carries one main outing, such as the Benagil sea caves by boat, Belém and the Oceanário, Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, or Porto’s tiles and bridges, with a licensed guide in every city. A private vehicle handles the road legs, and the Alfa Pendular train links Lisbon and Porto. Day nine stays flexible, so the family chooses between treetops and the ocean in Porto or a day in the Douro Valley.

How do you plan Portugal with kids around meals and downtime?

Portugal with kids works best when the outing fills the morning and the afternoon stays open for the beach, the pool or a nap. Your guide starts most visits mid-morning and wraps up near lunch. Portuguese food suits children well: grilled chicken and fresh fish, rice dishes, soups and the custard tarts that turn up in every café. Your planner reserves earlier dinner tables on request, and each base lasts three nights, so nobody packs a suitcase two mornings running.

How does a multigenerational trip to Portugal work?

A multigenerational trip to Portugal works when each generation gets a day built for its pace inside one shared plan. Because the journey runs privately for your family alone, your licensed guide adjusts each walk on the spot. Grandparents rest on a café terrace in Belém while the children race to the Oceanário, or stay at the top of Quinta da Regaleira while the grandchildren spiral down the well. The train between Lisbon and Porto replaces a long drive, and the three-night bases keep the pace calm for every age.

This 10-day family journey or a shorter Portugal trip?

Ten days suits families who want the beach and the two great cities without rushing. If the family has only a week, the 7-day Lisbon to Porto private tour keeps Lisbon, Sintra and Porto and leaves out the Algarve. Families with teenagers who love the outdoors also look at the 10-day Active Portugal tour, with hiking and e-bikes from the Douro to the Algarve.

Couples and adult groups looking at the same country often compare this journey with the 10-day private Portugal tour from Porto to the Algarve, which adds the Douro Valley and Évora at an adult pace. Every option on our Portugal journeys page runs privately and adjusts to your dates. Families drawn to camels and desert camps look at our 10-day private family tour of Morocco, from Fez to Marrakech with two nights in the Sahara. Families with two weeks combine both countries on our 14-day private family tour of Spain and Portugal, from Lisbon to Madrid.

Who this journey suits

Families with children from about six to twelve get the most from the route as written. They walk comfortably for a morning, enjoy the boat on day two and love the spiral stairs of the Initiation Well. Families with teenagers add a surf lesson in the Algarve, a guided kayak along the cliffs or a day in the Douro Valley.

Families with toddlers keep the same places and swap in shorter guided blocks, more pool time and a fourth night by the sea. Grandparents traveling with grandchildren get the private vehicle, train seats instead of a long drive north, and a guide who lets each generation peel off and rejoin. Extended families of eight or more travel the same way, with the vehicle and rooms sized to the party.

The people behind the route

Where your dates allow, Luisa, one of the licensed guides we work with in Lisbon and Sintra, leads the city and palace days. She paces Alfama, Belém and Sintra for young legs and saves the stories children remember, from the explorers’ ships to the well that spirals into the earth. Our team selects guides on this route for their experience, knowledge and engaging personalities, not egos.

What the 10-day family journey costs and what it includes

This private family tour of Portugal starts from $7,926 per person, double occupancy, for the 10-day route as written. The from-price covers nine nights in a choice from our vetted luxury five-star or deluxe four-star boutique hotels, private airport and station transfers, the Alfa Pendular train between Lisbon and Porto, private guided visits with licensed guides in every city, and the planning time of our team in Lisbon.

Several things move the price. Travel in peak summer and spring school-holiday weeks costs more than late autumn, because hotels, like airlines, price by demand. Extra rooms or suites for a larger family raise it, and the room plan for the children changes the per-person figure. Activities your planner arranges on request, such as a surf lesson, a tile-painting workshop, babysitting or a Douro Valley day, add to the total, and so do extra nights by the sea. Your planner sends a full quote once the ages, dates and room plan are clear.

When you know your dates and the ages of everyone traveling, speak with our team in Portugal about shaping this route for your family.

Questions families ask about this Portugal itinerary

What ages suit a private family tour of Portugal?

Every age travels well on this route, because it runs privately and three-night bases keep the pace calm. Children from about six to twelve enjoy it most as written. Toddlers and babies come along with shorter guided blocks and more pool time, and teenagers add a surf lesson, a kayak or a Douro Valley day. Your guide is glad to advise on suitability before booking.

How much walking does each day involve?

Most days hold one guided outing of about three hours, with breaks, and the private vehicle covers the distances between sights. Lisbon and Porto are cities of hills and stairs, so your guide plans the routes downhill where possible and keeps the vehicle close. The longest walk is the optional full Seven Hanging Valleys trail, about 6 kilometers one way, which keen walkers choose over the shorter stretch.

Can children go inside the Benagil sea cave?

Yes, by boat. Local rules allow visits inside the cave only with licensed operators, keep each visit to a few minutes, and do not allow swimming in or landing on the beach inside. Smaller boats enter the cave, so your planner books a boat that fits under the arch, and the whole family sees the open dome from the water.

Is the Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira suitable for young children?

Most children love it. The well spirals 27 meters down on stone stairs with nine landings, and a tunnel at the bottom leads out toward the gardens. The steps are uneven and the light is low in places, so young children walk it holding a hand. Your guide is glad to advise on suitability for the youngest travelers before the visit.

Will there be beach and pool time?

Yes. The route starts with three nights by the sea, and every afternoon in the Algarve stays open for the pool or the beach. In Lisbon, the family stops at the sand in Cascais on the Sintra day, and in Porto, Foz do Douro brings the Atlantic close on day nine. Your planner chooses hotels with pools where the family wants one.

What will the children eat in Portugal?

Portuguese food suits most children. Grilled chicken and fresh fish, rice dishes, soups and fresh bread turn up on every menu, and pastéis de nata appear in every café. Your planner shares any allergies or dietary needs with hotels and restaurants ahead of time, and reserves earlier dinner tables on request.

Do you provide car seats for young children?

Your planner arranges car seats and booster seats on request to suit each child’s age, height and weight, for every road transfer on the route. Article 55 of Portugal’s Highway Code requires children under 12 and shorter than 135 cm (about 4 feet 5 inches) to use an approved child restraint, so please send each child’s height and weight when you book. If the family prefers its own car seat, your planner tells the driver in advance.

Do you arrange babysitting or kids’ activities?

Your planner arranges on request a babysitter at the hotel for an evening, so the adults enjoy a dinner of their own. Several of the hotels we suggest run their own kids’ clubs. Your planner also arranges on request activities built for children and teenagers along the route, such as a surf lesson, a guided kayak, a tile-painting workshop or a chocolate tasting in Gaia.

How does the family travel between the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto?

Our team handles every transfer. A private vehicle covers Lisbon airport to the Algarve, about 3 hours, and the Algarve back to Lisbon, about 3 hours, with stops on the way. Between Lisbon and Porto the family rides the Alfa Pendular, about 2 hours 45 minutes, with a driver waiting at both stations, so nobody carries bags through the city.

When is the best time for a family trip to Portugal?

April to June and September to October suit this route best, with a warm sea and mild city days. School-holiday summers work well too, built around early boat trips, beach mornings and afternoons by the pool. Hotels, like airlines, price by demand, so peak weeks cost more, and the best value months are January, February and early March.

Who do we contact if something goes wrong or we want a change?

Your planner designs your journey with you and stays in touch after you land. For the fastest response at any hour, message your private WhatsApp group, where our 24/7 support team works alongside Rachel, Inés, Sofia or Dan. Because we begin no more than five journeys per country each week, peak spring and fall dates fill early, and that limit is what lets us stay this close to every trip.

We keep a list of vetted four- and five-star hotels, well located and enjoyed by our past travelers and by our own team.

Examples for each overnight stop on this route. Choose a deluxe boutique hotel or a five-star stay, and your travel advisor matches each night to your wishes, the season and availability.
